About RealTerm

The world is drowning in information

With cheap and powerful computers of today, more and more people move into the cyberspace. The ever-expanding Internet has exploded with websites that mushroom at amazing speed. Information on everything you can imagine seems to be available at your fingertips - searching is as easy as pressing a key. Or is it?

Searching is easy

All you do is use a free, publicly available search engine such as Altavista, Google, etc. You type in what you are looking for, press the key and bang! there it is. Searching is a solved problem.

You can also opt for browsing through one of these Internet directories which provide detailed subject hierarchies to find a small set of pre-categorized documents on a particular subject. A well-known example of this method is the extensive subject hierarchies on Yahoo!

Finding is not

But what about finding exactly what you are looking for?

Search engines are easy to use, but how about search results? What to do with those thousands and thousands of websites and webpages, with masses of information on them, that may or may not contain an answer to your query?

There are also problems with Internet directories. Firstly, the creation, expansion and maintenance of large hierarchies of categories is extremely labor-intensive and therefore not cheap. Secondly, the user intuition does not always correspond to the indexers' preconceived ideas of where the document should fit in the hierarchy.

Infogistics offers a solution to this

RealTerm is a powerful new technology from Infogistics which combines the strengths of both search engines and Internet directories by intuitively blending the flexibility of a query-based search with guided browsing capabilities of directories. It achieves this synergy by using advanced statistical and linguistic analysis to dynamically build an index from the key-words and phrases which are contained in a document collection. This term-index is not dissimilar to that found at the back of a book and the user can browse thorough it to locate the information they require.

The term-index, which is at heart of RealTerm technology, is built completely automatically and therefore it is cheap and fast to target RealTerm technology to a new enterprise, subject domain or language. Furthermore, this technology can be integrated with any main-stream search engine, thus it can add advanced knowledge management capabilities to traditional Information Management software without extensively re-engineering the existing deployment platform.

The important point here is that although the user knows what information he or she is looking for, they cannot possibly know the exact wording of the document which contains it. RealTerm enables the user to find the right words by presenting them with a term-index. Initially this index reflects all the information returned by a search but RealTerm monitors the user's actions to continually tailor the concepts (keywords and phrases) in the index to accurately reflect the user's interest, essentially supporting zooming in to the needle in the haystack. Rather than forcing the user to guess exactly the right query. RealTerm relies on the user's ability to "know it when s/he sees it".

What makes RealTerm different from search engines?

Well, everything about RealTerm is different from search engines. It is not a search engine but rather a sieve-like mechanism that takes over once a search engine has done its job.

The way it works is based on the assumption that people have a clear idea what they are looking for, but consider it difficult and restricting to find the best wording for their query. Since RealTerm actually understands the text, it extracts topics from the search results and presents them like back-of-a-book index. You can then narrow or expand to drill down to precisely the information you want.

All the search results are clearly laid out in a graphical interface, and the documents with the same content are grouped together into clusters. By clicking on each cluster you can have a closer look what it is about, and then delete it if not relevant. Thus within minutes you explore all the documents in your search.
